We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome Italian Greyhounds and IG Crosses of all ages from baby puppies to adolescent teens, to golden oldies in the later stages of life. In the case of dogs over the age of 10 years old, we commit to funding the costs of all ‘out of the ordinary’ veterinary care for the lifetime of the dog even after the dog is placed in an adoptive home. Our priority is always the good health and well-being of every Italian Greyhound in our care.

We handle cases with single dogs and pairs, as well as cases involving many dogs. In every situation we work to the specific needs of the dog(s) involved.

We can also support with emergency short-term care within our foster network if that is what best meets the needs of the dog(s).

Italian Greyhounds are placed into our care for many reasons, the most common being a change in the owner’s circumstances leading to the owner being unable to provide the care that the dog requires to live a healthy and happy life. The majority of owners placing Italian Greyhounds with us for adoption do so putting the best interests of the dog first – almost always a very difficult but responsible decision to make.

The Adoption Process – what to expect

After contacting us and discussing your dog’s current situation, if you decide to place your Italian Greyhound into our care the process we follow is outlined below.

1. Handover Meeting

One of our experienced Rescue Team will meet with you so that you can physically place your dog into our care and sign the relevant consent forms. We will work with you to make this as easy as possible at a time and place that is convenient for you. This is another opportunity for you to provide information to us about your dog, including any documents that may help with our ongoing care of the dog such as microchip registration documents, current medication, or any other veterinary notes.

While this is where you place your dog legally into our care, we are happy to provide you with updates on the well-being of your dog during the adoption process.

2. Assessment, Vet Check & Microchip

Once an Italian Greyhound is placed into our care, the dog will go to one of our experienced Rescue Team and stay with them in their home. We will assess the temperament of the dog and the dog’s specific needs. This assessment, combined with the information provided by the previous owner, enables us to find the best possible adoptive home for the Italian Greyhound.

All dogs placed into our care are vet checked. If any health issues are identified, the Rescue will ensure that the dog receives the appropriate care. We will also ensure that the dog is microchipped and update any existing microchip registrations.

3. Re-homing & Adoption

Once the Italian Greyhound has been assessed and we have a clear understanding of the needs of the individual dog we start a search for the most suitable adoptive home using our database of potential homes. Potential homes are identified based on criteria for every individual dog in our care as one home that is perfect for one Italian Greyhound may be completely unsuitable for another depending on the needs of the dog. The needs of each individual dog are our only priority.

Once we have short-listed potential homes, we conduct a process of interviews and home checks before making a final decision on which home will best meet the needs and care for the individual Italian Greyhound. All adopters are required to sign an adoption contract to further ensure the welfare of the dog. We only re-home Italian Greyhounds to adopters in mainland Great Britain: England, Scotland or Wales.

4. Neutering

At an appropriate time, all Italian Greyhounds placed into our care will be neutered so that he/she cannot be used for breeding. For most male dogs this will be before the dog goes to his new adoptive home. In some circumstances, there may need to be a delay before the dog is neutered e.g. Vets advise that females should be neutered at the mid-point in between seasons so if a female IG comes into our care whilst in season or just having finished a season, neutering may take place after adoption with neutering forming a specific condition of the adoption contract.

5. Lifetime Contact & Support

All of the Italian Greyhounds and IG Crosses that we place into adoptive homes will have lifetime contact and support from the Rescue. We start with a one-month check-in after adoption but we are always available to provide support and advice to our adoptive homes. As mentioned above, ‘out of the ordinary’ veterinary care for any dog over the age of 10 years old when adopted will be funded by the Rescue. Our key focus is to ensure that every Italian Greyhound can live a happy and healthy life.
